WHITE PAPERS LOOK AT PROJECT MANAGEMENT TOOLS

Two White Papers by Tom Clark, vice president and cofounder of Project Success Inc. are available here for download.

  1. Anticipating and Resolving Resource Overloads (PDF, 58k)
  2. Why Track Actual Costs and Usage on Projects? (PDF, 50k)

The White Papers relate to project management tools or methods. The papers derived from the Project Success MethodSM (Not sure if you realize that the use of project management has exploded in corporations and government over the last 5 years.)

The Project Success Method is a proprietary project planning and control methodology that has been developed and refined in thousands of client projects during the past 25 years. According to Clark, it is a practical, tightly integrated set of management processes by which project managers and their teams precisely define, thoroughly plan and persistently control their projects. The methodology has been "fire-tested" and has proven effective on virtually all types of projects regardless of size, scope, location, culture or industry. and used in companies such as BellSouth, Boeing, Time Warner, Sony, IBM, General Cable, Formica, First Data, Experian, etc.

Some of the most common types of projects which the Project Success Method are applied to are new product development/introduction, information technology development and implementation, process improvement, facility start-ups/relocations, major industrial maintenance, and marketing campaigns.

The Project Success Method has also been applied to new business start-ups, mergers/acquisitions, public stock offerings, and other highly strategic initiatives. It has even been used to plan major international sporting events and motion picture production. “The methodology is generic and we've never found a type of project to which it does not apply. Most importantly, the methodology is not software-specific and requires no prior project management training or professional certification - is easy to learn, highly effective and can be implemented quickly in as little as five days," says Clark.

Tom Clark holds bachelors and masters degrees in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Georgia State University. He is Professor Emeritus of Management at Georgia State University. He also served the University as Chair of the Department of Management and as Interim Dean of the College of Business Administration. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. Prior to beginning his academic career, Dr. Clark served in the U.S. Army Management Systems Support Agency at the Pentagon and was employed as an industrial engineer with a national firm in the printing industry.

ECOLOGY MEETS ECONOMY IN ECO-FRIENDLY EVR™ PANELS

Last year ATC Panels introduced EVR™ Panels, a family of environmentally responsible wood products. EVR Particleboard is the first available product in the EVR Panels family.

Produced exclusively at the company’s Moncure, N.C., facility, EVR Particleboard is an Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) containing 100 percent recycled and recovered wood waste or fiber generated from wood residue, and complies with the European E-1 standard for low emissions.

The company plans to certify its new EVR Particleboard with the CPA Certification Program. The CPA recently added the capability to certify formaldehyde emissions and physical properties to mill specifications or mill standards, and can now certify to an ‘E-1’ formaldehyde level.

“The CPA testing will help us to meet customer demands and enable us to compete more effectively in the global marketplace,” added Obach.

Additionally, as an Environmentally Preferable Product, and because the raw materials used to produce the new board are recovered within close proximity to the Moncure manufacturing facility, EVR Particleboard may offer architects and specifiers the opportunity to achieve valuable LEED credit points.

EVR Particleboard is available as raw board or can be specified for Thermally Fused Melamine (TFM) panels. Sizes include boards four and five feet wide in lengths of six, eight, nine and 12 feet with thicknesses ranging from 1/2 inch to 1-1/8 inches.

ATC Panels manufactures and sells particleboard, low density fiberboard (LDF), medium density fiberboard (MDF), high density fiberboard (HDF), gesso-coated MDF mouldings and Thermally Fused Melamine (TFM) panels at its five North American manufacturing facilities. The Moncure facility currently produces particleboard and TFM panels and has an annual particleboard production capacity of 150,000 MCF.

ECOTIMBER ANNOUNCES NEW SOLID BAMBOO FLOORING: NOW WITH FORMALDEHYDE-FREE ADHESIVES

According to EcoTimber CEO Lewis Buchner, EcoTimber is the first flooring company in North America to offer bamboo flooring made with formaldehyde-free adhesives as a standard product.

“Other companies offer formaldehyde free on a special-order basis and at a significant premium.

We understand that being green means harvesting our wood or bamboo sustainably, and keeping toxins out of the air in our customer's homes", said Buchner. "Our goal is to remain on the cutting edge of what it means to be a ‘green’ company, with our products and with our own operations."

PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVES CHAPTER FOCUSES ON ACHIEVING CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY

“Achieving Campus Sustainability in the Curriculum and Culture,” written by John Brennan, President, Green Mountain College, Poultney, Vermont, is one of the latest chapters in the popular Presidential Perspectives essay series that looks at sustainability issues on college campuses.

This chapter is a case study on how college campuses can leverage sustainability for institutional gain while facing a highly competitive higher education marketplace and energized social conscience. The new chapter is available at no cost and can be found at www.presidentialperspectives.org.

In his chapter, Mr. Brennan discusses the challenge of helping to create leaders who will respond to the issue of sustainability. He also describes the need for a coherent vision among trustees, administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni that can lead the college to success. The first campus to sign the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment, Green Mountain understands the challenges and the rewards that campuses face when integrating sustainability into their operation and curricula.

"Through his personal and professional interest in environmental stewardship, John Brennan has helped transform Green Mountain into a thriving and award winning campus by incorporating sustainability into the College’s very existence,” said Dr. Scott D. Miller, Executive Editor of Presidential Perspectives. “This chapter is particularly timely given the public sentiment for climate change, growth of campus sustainability initiatives, and the current election year.”

Launched in March 2006, Presidential Perspectives is an essay series written by college presidents for college presidents. The 2007-2008 series titled Enabling Campus Growth and Optimization addresses how colleges and universities are effectively and efficiently achieving institutional vision, mission, and ultimately competitive advantage. The series consists of 10 chapters, one released each month, to be released during 2007/2008 academic year.

Dr. Marylouise Fennell, senior counsel for the Washington, D.C.-based Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), and Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of Bethany College, WV, serve as executive editors for the 2007-2008 series, and have partnered with ARAMARK Higher Education to publish the series.

All essays are available at no cost and can be found at www.presidentialperspectives.org. This site serves as the repository and archive for all chapters, author biographies, the chapter calendar, and additional information about the essay series.

CASE STUDY ON TILE ROOFING

The Tile Roofing Institute (TRI) is a non-profit association of producers and associates of concrete and clay tile and is considered one of the leading experts in the industry. TRI has long been the industry's voice for code development and testing. Since it was founded more than 30 years ago, TRI has received nationwide recognition for its many contributions to tile roofing.

TRI's tile manufacturing member companies produce nearly all the standard and lightweight concrete and clay tile manufactured in North America. Worldwide, tile is the predominant roof covering material. In the United States, tile roofing is a $603-million industry, and it continues to grow in popularity. It is the dominant roofing material along the West Coast, across the Sunbelt and in Florida.

NEW VARIETY OF ROSE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO CAREFREE LANDSCAPE

Want some new ideas for flowers for your garden? George Atkinson, Director of Marketing for the Berry Family of Nurseries, suggests the addition of a new variety of a traditional favorite, the Double Knock Out® Rose.

“In contrast to older varieties of roses, this is an absolutely carefree landscape rose,” Atkinson says. “It has all the same wonderful characteristics as the original Knock Out selection but with twice as many petals per flower. Its double, fluorescent cherry red blossoms will attract attention all summer. And (bonus!) the “carefree” clause means that old flowers do not need to be removed from this blooming machine.”

The Double Knock Out Rose is resistant to all the common rose diseases. It grows to about four feet by four feet and claims a zone range of USDA 4-10.

Atkinson also suggest The Forever & Ever®, a collection of hydrangeas, which were introduced two years ago and are almost foolproof even for the novice gardener. They provide blooms from late spring to early fall and, unlike their ancestors, will tolerate pruning at most any time. Their ability to weather wintry conditions, and still produce blooms each year, is another improvement in this new generation of hydrangeas.

2008’s new hydrangeas -- Forever & Ever® Peppermint and Forever & Ever® Blue Heaven -- are hardy to Zone 5 and exhibit good disease resistance. Their ability to weather severe winter conditions allows them to bloom every year. These hydrangeas respond well to a sunny location in northern gardens but need partial shade in southern areas.

To compliment your new hydrangeas, Atkinson says consider planting one of the new breeds of coneflowers -- Pink Double Delight and Coconut Lime. These two beauties are tough as nails and, unlike most others, have double flowers. They are hardy to Zone 5, are virtually disease free and tolerate drought conditions very well.
