Carlisle Wide Plank Floors Carlisle Wide Plank Floors's FSC certified 100% Post-Consumer Reclaimed Antique Wood comes from structures that have been slated for demolition. The structures, many of which are hundreds of years old, are dismantled board by board and then handcrafted to live a second life as a floor. “By reusing materials, we highlight the natural beauty of aged wood and lessen the demand on natural resources,” says Carlisle. “Whether it is our Antique Chestnut, which played a significant role in early Americana, or our Antique Barnwood, which is typically a mix of Pine and Hemlock, we recognize the natural beauty and stewardship required to sustain their limited supply.” Every aspect of business at Carlisle Wide Plank Floors is based on their founding principles of sustainability and stewardship. “With the ever-increasing strain on our natural resources, we recognize our accountability to not only provide our customers with timeless and durable products, but also to be accountable for our business practices. We are proud to receive this certification for the same GREEN methods that we have used since my parents started the business four decades ago and look forward to obtaining FSC certification of our other types of wood in the near future.” Carlisle Wide Plank Floors was presented a chain-of-custody certification by the international Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for its entire line of 100% Post-Consumer Reclaimed Antique Wood. The certification was awarded by Smartwood, a third party organization authorized by the FSC to recognize green building products. Carlisle operates Design Centers in Stoddard, NH, Denver, CO, Atlanta, GA, and Los Angeles, CA. In addition to working with home owners, architects, designers and builder on personal residences, Carlisle’s wide plank floors are also featured in upscale commercial settings including the Mercer Hotel in New York City, The St Regis (Aspen) and most recently The Park Hyatt in Washington DC. GreenPrint’s software eliminates printing wasteful pages, and it incorporates a PDF writer, an innovative print overview called GreenView, and a reporting feature which keeps track of paper and money saved. It comes in a home version and an enterprise version which provides additional functionality and environmental savings for organizations. It is currently not available for Macs, although the company hopes to have a Mac version by summer 2007. Educational discounts are available. The company claims that if all U.S. households with a computer used its product, they would save over $6 billion a year, and if all new computers sold in 2006 used GreenPrint they would save over 20 million trees every year. It says that if all new computers used GreenPrint, they would reduce CO2 emissions by over 40 million tons, the equivalent of removing 8 million cars from the road for a year. And with its “Million Tree March,” GreenPrint gives customers the opportunity to double their impact on the environment. The campaign’s goal is to plant 500,000 trees on behalf of its customers by the end of March. If achieved, GreenPrint plans to match every tree planted with an additional tree, making March 2007 a “Million Tree March.” To learn more, visit www.printgreener.com.
An all-electric sport utility truck that can cruise on the freeway at up to 95 mph while carrying five passengers and a full payload could be the perfect vehicle for companies and government agencies that use fleets. At least that’s what Phoenix Motorcars of Ontario, California, figures. The company is hoping to manufacture and sell 500 fleet-ready vehicles by year’s end, and it will produce 16 pilot vehicles next month. The new zero-emission, four-wheel, all-electric vehicles exceed all the specifications for a Type III ZEV. They have a driving range of 130 miles. Their batteries can be recharged in less than 10 minutes and have a life-span of 12 years or more. Phoenix has made a three-year agreement with Altair Nanotechnologies, Inc., a leading supplier of nanomaterials and high-power battery systems technology which received a 16.6 percent ownership in the company. The agreement provides Phoenix with limited, exclusive use of Altairnano’s NanoSafe battery packs. The minimum commitment to maintain exclusivity for 2007 will provide $16 million in battery pack sales to Altairnano. For additional information, visit www.phoenixmotorcars.com. Let your bag or pack do the recharging. Called the “perfect solar gift,” Juice Bags integrate a thin-film solar panel made up of 52 micro solar cells. The panel is light, flexible, and powerful.
