April 25, 8:45 am – 2 pm
Green Schools Summit

Ponti Hall, Denver Art Museum, 100 W 14th Ave Pkwy
Denver, Colorado

Legislative, educational, environmental and nonprofit leaders gather with representatives from building and design companies to discuss how Colorado schools will implement green building principles into their design and construction. Presenters include Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff and Tom Plant, Director of the Governor’s Energy Office. The seminar is being sponsored by the Donnell-Kay Foundation, UBS Paine Weber, the Governor’s Energy Office and the US Green Building Council.

House Bill 1335, Building Excellent Schools Today (B.E.S.T.), would establish a Public Schools Facilities Authority to fund repair and construction in public schools. In order to apply for the funds, schools will have to meet certain green building and energy efficiency criteria. The Summit will educate builders and school leaders about high performance school building design and construction so that they may receive funding from the B.E.S.T. legislation.

April 30, 2pm EDT
Telephone Seminar - Fire Safety Guidelines for PV Systems
Via telephone

Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) will hold a Telephone Seminar Wednesday, April 30, at 2pm EDT (1pm CDT, noon MDT, 11am PDT, 10am Alaska, 8am Hawaii) on Fire Safety Guidelines for PV Systems. The seminar will last for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Pre-registration is required.

Over the past several years various fire districts in California and throughout the U.S. have raised concerns about the safety of fire fighters working on buildings with PV systems. Many of these concerns centered on how to ventilate a roof covered with PV modules, or how to disconnect the live circuits so that fire fighters will not be shocked by exposed conductors.

The California Solar Energy Industries Association (Cal SEIA) worked with the California State Fire Marshall’s office to set up a series of meetings between representatives of the solar industry and interested parties in the fire protection community. The meetings produced set of guidelines for PV fire safety. The guidelines focus on the required area on rooftops for access of firefighters to the roof and to ventilation requirements for residential and commercial rooftops.

Bill Brooks of Brooks Engineering will discuss the guidelines and the issues that lead to their development. Mr. Brooks participated in the meetings which developed the guidelines.

Application Deadline: Colorado Solar Innovation Grant

The 2007 Colorado Legislature provided funding to the Governor's Energy Office (GEO) to create the Clean Energy Fund. The Clean Energy Fund provides funding for the purposes of advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy throughout the state.

Under GEO's stewardship, the Solar Innovation Grant (SIG) portion of the Clean Energy Fund will be used to support innovative programs that can demonstrate a strategy and implementation plan for breaking down financial, educational, political, and technical barriers to greater penetration of solar electric and solar thermal technologies in the residential and commercial sectors. Approximately three hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($350,000) is available during the current competitive cycle. Individual awards will not exceed $50,000.
